Animated website templates for Cursor

AnimatedWebs templates reach Cursor through the AnimatedWebs MCP server: click Add to Cursor or add the server to mcp.json, sign in once in your browser, and ask Cursor to find a template and build it in your project. Cursor fetches the full build prompt itself, so there is nothing to copy or paste.

How a template gets into Cursor

  1. 1

    Add the server to Cursor

    On the MCP page, pick Cursor and click Add to Cursor, which opens Cursor and adds the server. Or add it by hand to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project, or to .cursor/mcp.json inside one project.

    mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "animatedwebs": {
          "url": "https://mcp.animatedwebs.com"
        }
      }
    }
  2. 2

    Sign in once

    A browser window opens. Sign in with your AnimatedWebs account and approve access. Cursor supports OAuth for Streamable HTTP servers, so a free account works and there is no API key to copy.

  3. 3

    Ask the agent for a template

    Describe the site you want, or name a template from this page. Cursor asks for approval before using MCP tools by default, so approve the calls as they come up. The arrow next to a tool name shows its arguments.

    describe it
    Search animatedwebs for a slow video-hero template for a restaurant,
    then build it as the landing page of this project.
    or name it
    Fetch the build prompt for "brinewell-buoy-ocean-chapters" from the animatedwebs MCP
    and build it in this repo.
  4. 4

    Approve the fetch and the build

    get_template_prompt returns the full build prompt as Markdown, and Cursor then builds the site in your project. A free template needs only your sign-in. For a Pro template, Pro or Lifetime covers it, or the first fetch spends one Prompt Pack credit.

  5. 5

    Add the rules file, then compare

    Optional: save animatedwebs.mdc from the tools page into .cursor/rules for a playbook on WebGL and scroll-story sites. Then start your dev server and compare the result with the live demo on the template page.

Live demos to build with Cursor

Another spread of live WebGL, canvas, video and CSS-motion demos, with no more than four of any one kind. Any template works through the MCP server, so pick by look.

Tips for Cursor

  • Put the server in ~/.cursor/mcp.json to have AnimatedWebs in every project, or in .cursor/mcp.json to keep it inside one project.
  • Cursor project rules must use the .mdc extension in .cursor/rules, and a plain .md file there is ignored. The free animatedwebs.mdc file on the tools page already has the right format.
  • Cursor asks for approval before using MCP tools by default. To switch the server on or off, use Customize in the sidebar.
  • Running headless? Use an API key from your dashboard in an Authorization: Bearer header. Cursor fills in ${env:NAME} inside headers, so keep the key in an environment variable instead of the file.

Limits to know

  • The server hands Cursor a build prompt and the template's details, not the demo's source code, so expect a close build and not a copy.
  • A call without a valid sign-in or key gets a 401 whose message points to the setup guide at /mcp and to the API key page in your dashboard.
  • Photos and video in the live demos come from licensed stock and generators and are licensed to AnimatedWebs for display in the demos only, so replace them with media you own or license before you publish.

Questions about Cursor

How do I connect Cursor to AnimatedWebs?+

Open the AnimatedWebs MCP page, pick Cursor and click Add to Cursor. Or add an animatedwebs entry with the server address under mcpServers in ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or in .cursor/mcp.json for one project.

Do I need an API key?+

No. Cursor supports OAuth, so you sign in through the browser with your AnimatedWebs account, and a free account works. API keys from the dashboard are for headless use and go in an Authorization: Bearer header.

Where does the Cursor config file go?+

Cursor reads ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home directory for tools available everywhere, and .cursor/mcp.json inside a project for project-specific tools. Remote servers use a url entry instead of a command.

Will Cursor ask before it uses the server?+

By default, yes. Cursor asks for approval before using MCP tools, and the arrow next to a tool name shows its arguments. You can enable or disable MCP servers from Customize in the sidebar.

Is it free to try?+

Adding the server costs nothing, and a free AnimatedWebs account opens the free templates through it. Pro templates need Pro, Lifetime or a Prompt Pack credit. What Cursor itself costs is set by Cursor, so check its pricing.

Facts checked on

  • Cursor asks for approval before using MCP tools by default, and you can enable or disable MCP servers from Customize in the sidebar. Cursor docs: MCP ↗
  • An install link looks like cursor://anysphere.cursor-deeplink/mcp/install?name=NAME&config=BASE64_ENCODED_CONFIG, where the config is base64-encoded JSON. Cursor docs: MCP install links ↗
  • Project rules live in .cursor/rules as .mdc files, and a plain .md file there is ignored. Cursor docs: Rules ↗
