Use AnimatedWebs in Codex

Codex adds the AnimatedWebs MCP server with codex mcp add, then signs you in with codex mcp login. The setup is stored in config.toml, which the Codex CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app share.

Set up AnimatedWebs in Codex

Server address: https://mcp.animatedwebs.com

  1. 1

    Add the server

Run the two commands in a terminal. The first writes a [mcp_servers.animatedwebs] table to ~/.codex/config.toml.

    terminal
codex mcp add animatedwebs --url https://mcp.animatedwebs.com
    codex mcp login animatedwebs
  2. 2

    Finish the login

codex mcp login opens your browser. Sign in with your AnimatedWebs account and approve access.

  3. 3

    Start Codex

Run codex, or open the IDE extension. The server loads at startup.

  4. 4

    Ask for a template

Describe the site and let Codex call search_templates and get_template_prompt.

Headless or CI? Use an API key from your dashboard instead of the browser sign-in.

Check that it works

  • Run codex mcp list. animatedwebs should appear in the list of servers.
  • Inside the codex TUI, type /mcp to see the active servers. Ask it to run the get_account tool from the animatedwebs server. A reply with your plan and today's usage means the connection and your sign-in both work.

Three requests to try

Paste one into Codex. Each one makes it call real AnimatedWebs tools.

example prompt 1
Use the animatedwebs MCP to find a template for a craft brewery in Denver and scaffold it in this repo.
example prompt 2
Search animatedwebs for a pricing section with a toggle and add it to app/pricing/page.tsx.
example prompt 3
List the animatedwebs template categories, then pick the best one for a boutique hotel and show me its prompt.

If something goes wrong in Codex

The server times out at startup
Raise startup_timeout_sec in the [mcp_servers.animatedwebs] table. The default is 10 seconds.
The login callback fails
Set a fixed callback port with mcp_oauth_callback_port in config.toml, or per server with mcp_servers.animatedwebs.oauth.callback_port, and allow it through your firewall.
You cannot complete the browser sign-in
On a remote or headless machine, set bearer_token_env_var in the [mcp_servers.animatedwebs] table to the name of an environment variable that holds your AnimatedWebs API key.
A tool call runs too long
tool_timeout_sec defaults to 60 seconds and can be raised in the same table.

Questions about Codex and AnimatedWebs

Do I set this up again for the IDE extension?+

No. The Codex docs say the ChatGPT desktop app, the CLI and the IDE extension share MCP configuration.

Can I scope AnimatedWebs to one project?+

Yes. Codex reads a .codex/config.toml in trusted projects, so the same table can live next to your code.

How do I use an API key instead of the login?+

Set bearer_token_env_var to the name of an environment variable that holds your aw_ key, as the dashboard snippet shows.

Which transport does Codex use for this?+

Streamable HTTP, which is what --url configures. AnimatedWebs serves that transport.

Facts checked on

What this page says about Codex comes from its official documentation, linked below, and Codex can change, so check its docs for the latest. What it says about AnimatedWebs comes from how our own MCP server works.

  • codex mcp add <name> --url <url> adds a streamable HTTP server, and codex mcp login <name> runs OAuth. Codex MCP docs ↗
  • Servers live in ~/.codex/config.toml, or .codex/config.toml in trusted projects, and the ChatGPT desktop app, CLI and IDE extension share them. Codex MCP docs ↗
  • codex mcp list lists servers, and /mcp in the TUI shows active ones. Codex MCP docs ↗
  • startup_timeout_sec defaults to 10 and tool_timeout_sec to 60; mcp_oauth_callback_port fixes the OAuth callback port. Codex MCP docs ↗
