Use AnimatedWebs in LM Studio

LM Studio 0.3.17 and later can use remote MCP servers, so you add AnimatedWebs to mcp.json with its URL and an Authorization header. Your local model can then search templates and fetch build prompts.

Set up AnimatedWebs in LM Studio

Server address: https://mcp.animatedwebs.com

  1. 1

    Check your version

    LM Studio added MCP support in 0.3.17 (b10). Update first if you are on an older build.

  2. 2

    Copy your API key

    Open the developer page in your AnimatedWebs dashboard and copy the aw_ key. Free accounts have one.

  3. 3

    Edit mcp.json

    In the Program tab, click Install and then Edit mcp.json, and add the entry. If you paste only a server snippet, copy the part after "mcpServers": { and before its closing brace.

    mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "animatedwebs": {
          "url": "https://mcp.animatedwebs.com",
          "headers": {
            "Authorization": "Bearer aw_your_key"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  4. 4

    Chat with tools on

    Load a model that can call tools and ask for a design. Start with a short request, because tool results use context.

Your API key is on the developer page of your dashboard. Every account has one, free accounts included.

Check that it works

  • Check by prompt. Ask it to run the get_account tool from the animatedwebs server. A reply with your plan and today's usage means the connection and your sign-in both work.
  • If the model answers without calling anything, try a model with better tool-calling support.

Three requests to try

Paste one into LM Studio. Each one makes it call real AnimatedWebs tools.

example prompt 1
Use the animatedwebs server to search for a template for a farmers market and list the top three with their slugs.
example prompt 2
Search animatedwebs for a cinematic background for a hero and give me the link.
example prompt 3
Call animatedwebs list_categories and tell me which category fits a small architecture studio.

If something goes wrong in LM Studio

The JSON will not save
When you add a server by hand, copy only the content after "mcpServers": { and before the closing brace, as LM Studio's docs advise.
The model overflows its context
LM Studio warns that servers built for cloud models can return a lot of tokens and overflow a local model's context. Ask for small results, such as one template.
A 401 from the server
Check the Authorization header: Bearer, a space, then the aw_ key. A newline in the key breaks it.
You worry about what a server can touch
LM Studio's docs say to install MCP servers only from trusted sources. The AnimatedWebs tools return catalog results and do not touch files on your machine.

Questions about LM Studio and AnimatedWebs

Does LM Studio support OAuth for MCP?+

Its MCP page documents the headers field and does not mention OAuth, so this guide uses the API key.

Is the model run on my machine?+

Yes, local models run in LM Studio on your hardware. Only the MCP calls to the AnimatedWebs server go over the internet.

Is there an Add to LM Studio button?+

LM Studio's docs mention an Add to LM Studio deeplink button when a server offers one. AnimatedWebs does not publish one, so use the mcp.json entry.

Which model should I load?+

Pick one with good tool-calling support. LM Studio's docs do not list models, so try a few with a simple request.

Facts checked on
