Use AnimatedWebs in Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI adds the AnimatedWebs MCP server with one gemini mcp add command and signs in through /mcp auth. Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for unpaid tier and Google One users on June 18, 2026, so check which one your account uses.
- Connects with
- Streamable HTTP (httpUrl)
- Sign-in
- /mcp auth (OAuth), or --header
- Config file
- ~/.gemini/settings.json

Check you are on Gemini CLI
Google's notice says unpaid tier and Google One users moved to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026. If that is you, use the Antigravity guide instead.
- 2
Add the server
Run the command. It writes an animatedwebs entry to ~/.gemini/settings.json because of --scope user; without that flag the default scope is the current project.
terminalgemini mcp add --scope user --transport http animatedwebs https://mcp.animatedwebs.comin Gemini CLI/mcp auth animatedwebsor ~/.gemini/settings.json{ "mcpServers": { "animatedwebs": { "httpUrl": "https://mcp.animatedwebs.com" } } } - 3
Authenticate
Start gemini, type /mcp auth animatedwebs, and finish the sign-in in your browser. The browser must be on the same machine, because the callback returns to localhost.
- 4
Ask for a template
Describe the site you want and let Gemini CLI call the AnimatedWebs tools.
Headless or CI? Use an API key from your dashboard instead of the browser sign-in.
Check that it works
- Run gemini mcp list in a shell. A connected server prints a line ending in Connected.
- Inside gemini, /mcp lists each server as CONNECTED, CONNECTING or DISCONNECTED. Ask it to run the get_account tool from the animatedwebs server. A reply with your plan and today's usage means the connection and your sign-in both work.
Three requests to try
Paste one into Gemini CLI. Each one makes it call real AnimatedWebs tools.
Use the animatedwebs MCP to find a template for a food truck in Portland and build it in this directory.Search animatedwebs for a hero with a looping video background and add it to index.html.Fetch the animatedwebs style reference for a Notion-like site and turn it into CSS variables. If something goes wrong in Gemini CLI
- The server shows DISCONNECTED
- Check the URL, then run /mcp or gemini mcp list again. Run gemini with --debug (F12 opens the debug console in interactive mode) to see the error.
- OAuth fails over SSH or in a container
- The sign-in needs a local browser and a localhost callback. On a headless machine, add the server with --header "Authorization: Bearer aw_..." and your API key instead.
- The callback is rejected with a 400
- Gemini CLI's docs list Issuer mismatch and Missing issuer parameter errors for the callback. Retry /mcp auth animatedwebs from a fresh session.
- Odd server name behavior
- Do not use underscores in the server name. Use hyphens, or the plain name animatedwebs as above.
Questions about Gemini CLI and AnimatedWebs
Should I use Gemini CLI or Antigravity CLI?+
Use whichever your Google account is entitled to. Google's notice says Antigravity CLI replaced Gemini CLI for unpaid tier and Google One users, and it does not say who else keeps Gemini CLI, so check Google's page for your plan.
What is the difference between url and httpUrl?+
In Gemini CLI's settings, url is the SSE endpoint and httpUrl is the Streamable HTTP endpoint. AnimatedWebs serves Streamable HTTP, so the snippet uses httpUrl.
Where are my OAuth tokens kept?+
In ~/.gemini/mcp-oauth-tokens.json, according to the Gemini CLI docs.
What does --scope user change?+
The default scope for gemini mcp add is the current project, written to .gemini/settings.json. --scope user writes to ~/.gemini/settings.json, so AnimatedWebs is available in every directory.
Facts checked on
What this page says about Gemini CLI comes from its official documentation, linked below, and Gemini CLI can change, so check its docs for the latest. What it says about AnimatedWebs comes from how our own MCP server works.
- Gemini CLI supports Streamable HTTP (httpUrl) and SSE (url) remote servers, with headers for either. Gemini CLI MCP docs ↗
- gemini mcp add --transport http --header "Authorization: Bearer ..." <name> <url> adds an HTTP server; the default scope is project. Gemini CLI MCP docs ↗
- OAuth is discovered automatically after a 401; /mcp auth <server> authenticates, and it needs a local browser. Gemini CLI MCP docs ↗
