Use AnimatedWebs in Zed

Zed adds the AnimatedWebs MCP server as a remote context server with one url entry in settings.json. With no Authorization header set, Zed runs the standard MCP OAuth sign-in for you.

Set up AnimatedWebs in Zed

Server address: https://mcp.animatedwebs.com

  1. 1

    Open Zed's settings

    Run zed: open settings file from the Command Palette. Or go to Settings, AI, MCP Servers, click Add Server and choose Add Remote Server, which writes the entry for you.

  2. 2

    Add the server

    Put this under context_servers.

    settings.json
    {
      "context_servers": {
        "animatedwebs": {
          "url": "https://mcp.animatedwebs.com"
        }
      }
    }
  3. 3

    Sign in

    Zed prompts you to authenticate through the MCP OAuth flow because no Authorization header is set. Approve access with your AnimatedWebs account.

  4. 4

    Use it in the Agent Panel

    Open the Agent Panel and ask for a design. Zed asks to confirm tool calls by default.

Headless or CI? Use an API key from your dashboard instead of the browser sign-in.

Check that it works

  • Go to Settings, AI, MCP Servers and look at the dot next to animatedwebs. Green with the tooltip Server is active means it is running.
  • Ask it to run the get_account tool from the animatedwebs server. A reply with your plan and today's usage means the connection and your sign-in both work.

Three requests to try

Paste one into Zed. Each one makes it call real AnimatedWebs tools.

example prompt 1
Use animatedwebs to find a template for a veterinary clinic in Raleigh and scaffold it in this project.
example prompt 2
Search animatedwebs components for an animated pricing card and add the source to this crate's web folder.
example prompt 3
Get the animatedwebs style reference for a Linear-like site and write its tokens to a CSS file.

If something goes wrong in Zed

The dot is not green
Check the URL and your settings JSON first. Zed's docs tell you to check the provider's documentation for the correct URL, headers and tokens.
A tool call fails
The error appears in the agent's response. A 401 means the sign-in is missing or expired; remove any stale Authorization header so Zed can start OAuth again.
Every tool call needs a confirmation
That is the default (agent.tool_permissions.default is confirm). Change it in settings if you want fewer prompts.
Your Zed predates the permissions change
Zed v0.224.0 replaced agent.always_allow_tool_actions with agent.tool_permissions.default. Update Zed if the setting name does not match.

Questions about Zed and AnimatedWebs

Does Zed document the transport?+

Zed's MCP page describes remote servers by URL and does not name the transport. AnimatedWebs serves Streamable HTTP at that URL.

Where do I put an API key instead?+

Add a headers object with Authorization set to Bearer and your aw_ key. Zed only starts OAuth when no Authorization header is configured.

Is it called MCP servers or context servers?+

Both. The settings key is context_servers, and the settings UI calls the same list MCP Servers.

Can I add it from the interface instead?+

Yes. Settings, AI, MCP Servers has an Add Server button with an Add Remote Server option, and Zed creates the settings entry for you.

Facts checked on

What this page says about Zed comes from its official documentation, linked below, and Zed can change, so check its docs for the latest. What it says about AnimatedWebs comes from how our own MCP server works.

  • Remote servers go under context_servers with a url and optional headers, for example an Authorization Bearer token. Zed MCP docs ↗
  • When a remote server has no Authorization header, Zed prompts you to authenticate with the standard MCP OAuth flow. Zed MCP docs ↗
  • A green dot with the tooltip Server is active in Settings, AI, MCP Servers marks a working server. Zed MCP docs ↗
  • Tool calls require approval by default through agent.tool_permissions.default, which replaced always_allow_tool_actions in v0.224.0. Zed MCP docs ↗
